Ultrasound of the Achilles tendon

Purpose of the study

Ultrasound is the most effective diagnostic method for the Achilles tendon. The structure of the tendon, the presence of fluid under the tendon (inflammatory exudate), as well as in the tendon bursa and in the subcutaneous calcaneus of the heel are evaluated. An evaluation of the bony outlines of the heel bone and the heel attachment of the tendon is also performed.

Indications for an ultrasound examination of the Achilles tendon include an inflammatory process taking place in the tendon, damage to the tendon (rupture of the Achilles tendon) and a sudden or increasing sensation of restriction of mobility within the joint over time.

The result of the test is provided in the form of a description immediately after the test.
